Description

Iowa Western Community College seeks a full-time assistant cheerleading coach who will provide a visible positive presence to promote school spirit at all home athletic events. This position will foster a connection with the squad, the athletic teams, and their visiting families during the season. The assistant coach is responsible for assisting with tryouts, pre-season training, all games, practice and workouts, as well as assisting with events planned by the spirit coordinator and residence life. The assistant coach will assist with managing the mascot team, and coordinate events amongst campus departments to enhance our publicity.. The assistant coach will be actively traveling and recruiting throughout the year for our 2027-2028. This is a full-time, 12-month staff position with evening and weekend hours required. This position reports to the Spirit Coordinator/Head Cheer Coach for the Iowa Western cheerleaders.

Job Duties


  • Actively participate in all college activities which lead to student recruitment, retention, and completion.

  • Serving as co-sponsor and assistant to the head coach for the Iowa Western Cheerleaders.

  • Assisting with promoting a spirit of cooperation and collaboration between, but not limited to, the Iowa Western cheerleaders, and Iowa Western Athletics.

  • Assisting with marketing of the Iowa Western cheer program to the public through community service and by maintaining the Iowa Western cheerleading website.

  • Assisting with recruiting cheerleader candidates including, but not limited to, visiting and communication with regional and national high schools.

  • Assisting with conducting tryouts/auditions to select new members of the squad.

  • Assisting with coordinating fundraising activities.

  • Assisting with maintaining and inventorying supplies and uniforms. Placing orders as needed.

  • Assisting with coordinating participation in cheerleading camps including, but not limited to summer camps.

  • Assisting with coordinating participation in competitions, including all choreography, music, travel arrangements and supplies.

  • Assisting with preparing, organizing and attending practices, games, performances, appearances, competitions, and off-season training.

  • Assisting with providing coaching services and professional support at all events, traveling with the squad to and from events as needed, including but not limited to out-of-town, athletic events and cheer camp.

  • Assisting with providing the health and safety of the cheerleaders and participants per established policies, procedures, and guidelines.

  • Assisting with collaboration with athletic trainer(s) to set expectations for nutrition, exercise conditioning for the squad. 

  • Assisting in day-to-day operations by the spirit coordinator and residence life.

  • Performing other duties as assigned by Head Coach and the Athletic Director.

  • Uphold the Athletics Code of Conduct.

  • Maintain and update rosters and emergency contact information for all team members.

  • Able to create and teach proper conditioning warm-ups and cool downs for practices, games, and competitions.

  • Possesses excellent writing and public speaking skills.

  • Ability to adapt to new and innovative situations.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with attention to detail

  •  Must be able to perform Head Coach Duties on an emergency basis.

  • Assists the Head Coach in all aspects of the cheerleading program and mascot program.

  • Encourages high academic standards by discussing course grades with student-athletes.

  • Assists in coordinating travel, to include ground/air transportation, lodging and meals to all football and selected menâ??s and womenâ??s basketball games, and other events as requested.

  • If it is determined by the Head Cheerleading Coach in conjunction with the Athletic Director that the team is capable both skill wise and financially, the cheerleading program under the direction of the Head Cheer Coach can pursue national competition (choreography, music, travel). Under these circumstances this position assists in all aspects related to the national competition.

  • As a member of the Athletic Department, assistant coaches need to represent their school and program in a manner that supports the mission of the college. Speaking engagements, instructional clinics, development efforts, and community relation programs need to reflect a professional and positive impression to the media or general public.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications/Skills: 

  • Associateâ??s degree or equivalent required.
  • Experience coaching/playing in the sport, college level required.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Have a valid driverâ??s license with a good driving record.
  • Positive attitude
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times
  • Self-starter with the ability to perform with little or no direct supervision
  • Regular, prompt & reliable attendance

Physical Demands

Physical Demands of Essential Functions:

Heavy work (lift 30-50 lbs.) 

Very heavy work (lift over 50 lbs.) 

Other physical requirements (note):

  • Work is routinely performed in an outdoor environment. 
  • Requires prolonged standing, frequent bending, and stooping or stretching. 
  • Also requires lifting and operating soccer equipment. 
  • Working routinely outside in a variety of environmental conditions both on and off the field. 
  • Frequent contact with students. 
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Requires ability to distinguish letters or symbols. 
  • Requires the use of office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, telephone, faxes, and copiers.
  • Ability to drive company owned or personal vehicle.
