A Brief Overview
Coordinates all activities related to the Nurse Residency Program for new graduate nurses and the preceptor development program. Activities include course schedules, creating, delivering, and evaluating clinical content to be presented using engaging teaching strategies, collaborating with content experts to deliver education that builds professional skill, communication, critical thinking, and self-awareness to provide an effective transition for new graduate nurses into their pediatric nursing role. Maintains course related equipment & supplies. Develops and monitors program budget for equipment and supplies in collaboration with Director. Responsible for coordination, implementation, and evaluation of performance improvement projects related to the Nurse Residency Program and Preceptor Program workflows and outcomes.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates Nurse Residency Program activities to facilitate an effective transition from student nurse to pediatric nurse ensuring foundational pediatric nursing concepts and skills are acquired for each nurse residency cohort. Collaborates with area leaders and educators to define nurse resident course content to be presented. Creates course outline, presentation, and evaluation for each class/cohort meeting defined stating objectives and expected outcomes. Creates anticipate supplies and equipment list for each course. Delivers course content, incorporating interactive techniques and gaming into course/cohort meeting delivery methods using adult learning principles. Uses low fidelity simulation techniques where appropriate. Develops and publicizes cohort class/cohort meeting schedule with consideration to New Employee Orientation Schedule and Clinical Skills Lab schedule and content and speaker availability. Develops process for and delivers communication for each new cohort on expected class schedule and expectations for participation. Maintains awareness of clinical practice changes in the organization. Incorporates changes into nurse residency course content where appropriate. Conducts regular evaluation of each cohort course work/cohort meetings through feedback from nurse resident participants and area nurse leaders. Analyzes feedback and incorporates changes in program content or process where needed. Creates program annual report synthesizing the years accomplishments for the programs related to expected outcomes; course evaluations; changes made; strengths and opportunities in order to have a program strategic plan for the coming year. Provides regular mentoring to nurse residents throughout their program, facilitating problem solving and self-advocacy. Collaborates with area leaders when issues arise using established work flow. .
  • Coordinates the formal preceptor program to ensure consistent standards in teaching and the promotion of quality professional patient care across areas. Oversees the preceptor education program in collaboration with lead preceptor group, area managers and unit educators/CNSs leading the review/ evaluation process through use of literature reviews, benchmark data, and outside resources. Develops, implements and evaluates Preceptor Program courses and specific skills classes for preceptors. Uses an effective presentation style to teach the preceptor education course and preceptor annual skills validation. Fosters the use of adult learning and critical thinking principles with preceptors by providing ideas, skill stations, different teaching styles, and related activities to help the preceptor be a more effective teacher. Coordinates program schedule of offerings and publishes course for registration. Engages lead preceptors in presenting course materials, mentoring them to use effective and engaging teaching strategies.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in nursing Required and
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, health or education required within 4 years of hire Required

Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years experience in nursing Required and
  • Minimum 3 years experience in nursing education Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong advanced nursing education knowledge and background required with pediatric nursing experience preferred.
  • Skills in effective, professional verbal presentations/teaching that incorporate adult learning philosophy and principals and engage learners.
  • Ability to be self-directed, with minimum supervision, and detail oriented.
  • Skills in project/systems management to include coordination, implementation, and evaluation processes
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, to include use of computer technology in developing program presentations
  • Knowledge in incorporating leadership skills of consultation, education, collaboration, and research.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in applying the nursing process, nursing skills, and critical thinking into patient care, teaching, and systems.
  • Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritization skills.

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure valid in the state of Nebraska Required and
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association Required and
  • CPN - Certified Pediatric Nurse   Required or
  • CCCRN - Certified Critical Care RN   Required or
  • RNC-NIC - Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing Required or
  • RNC - Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing Required or
  • RN-BC - Pediatric Nurse   Required and
  • NPD - Nursing Professional Development   Preferred
