Qualifications
Job Summary:  
The Staff Attorney has primary responsibility to assist the Chief Legal Officer in providing legal services for Erlanger and its related entities.  Duties include legal guidance, document preparation, and support for both Management and the Board of Trustees; provide assurance that actions proposed by Management and the Board are consistent with sound legal theory and practice, compatible with the Authority Act, in accord with Board policy, not in violation of any local, state, or federal law, defensible, and congruous with acting for the public good.  The Attorney will work under the guidance of and will assist the Chief Legal Officer in protecting the Authority against legal risk and assuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and orders of courts of competent jurisdiction. 

Education:
Required:
Graduate from an accredited law school with a LL.B or J.D. Degree. High academic achievement with participation in law review and/or moot court is highly desirable

Three to five (5) years responsible legal activity experience. 

Preferred:
Background in health care law is preferred as well as experience with contracting, human resources and regulatory/compliance issues.  Experience in providing legal representation to not-for-profit corporations and health care providers is highly desirable.  Familiarity with an electronic contract review process, such as Meditract. 

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration:
Required:
A license to practice law in Tennessee or eligible for admission to the Tennessee Bar. 

Department Position Summary:

-Assist Management with quality legal guidance.
-Assist Chief Legal Officer in supporting the Board of Trustees Office.
-Follow procedures to assure compliance with Authority policies. 
-Assist the Chief Legal Officer in providing effective and efficient organization of the legal function for the Health System with a strong emphasis on quality results (output) and expense control/reduction (operational, claim defense and claim awards).  
-Assist in providing specialized support to Risk Management, Compliance, Privacy, Human Resources, Medical Staff Office, and other departments as needed.
-Preserve staff awareness of current and pertinent new legal issues and interpretations thereof  in a manner understood by and useful to staff.
-Maintain a high level of working knowledge of legal principles of healthcare organizations  including anti-kickback and self-referral laws and regulations, EMTALA, HIPAA, employment laws and regulations and requirements of federal and state health programs
-Review, interpret, and provide guidance and recommendations relative to various legal documents.
-Develop contracts for physician services and other service agreements, and contracts for purchase of supplies and equipment
-Draft legal opinions when requested which identify options to accomplish Authority goals while maintaining compliance with applicable legal requirements.
-Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
